HAWBUSH URBAN FARM ASSOCIATION

HISTORY

Hawbush Urban Farm was originally set up in 1980/1. A group of residents visited a 'city farm' in Bristol. Following that visit, they decided that maybe it was a good idea to have our very own 'city farm' right here in Hawbush. Many sites for the project were investigated until eventually the then 'stearing' committee settled on the land we occupy now. Once owned by the 'Coalboard' the land is right on the edge of the housing estate and near enough for children to reach safely. The downside being that the land is not the best graizing, parts of it covered with coal spoil. However we were able to improve its potencial.

Work soon began on the land now owned by the local authority and leased to us for a 'peppercorn' rent of £5/annum. Ground work was slow but eventually the 'farm' came together.

In those days we occupied an old mobile classroom and we were just about 1 acre. We have since doubled that and added a new 'visitor centre' play area, picknick area, and regularly throughout the season hold family open days and festivals etc.

Our Membership

We always welcome new members to the farm for those who like to get involved with the running and day to day activities but this is not neccessary for those of you who just want to visit from time to time. Everyone is welcome.

Policy statement

Hawbush Urban Farm is a working farm and not a sanctuary. Although from time to time we do take in rescued animals we are essentially a 'working farm'. We breed livestock of varing species some of which will go to 'livestock' market. All our animals recieve a good standard of care and welfare whilst they are with us. We never 'knowingly' sell to establishments where the same level of 'care' will not be given. We do not believe in 'tail docking','tooth clipping', 'bleeding' or any other kind of 'mutilation', battery farming or any other kind of 'intensive' farming methods. To that aim we are confident that our animals are happy and comfortable.
